Special ABAP/BW course offered by NECC
SAP’s Business Warehouse (BW) has recently become SAP’s most strategic tool for delivering reports for SAP’s R/3 databases, as well as supporting SAP’s own leading-edge add-on software such as SEM/BPS, SEM/CPM, and APO (all of which use BW as a database platform)
SAP has been delivering a lot of standard R/3 reports via BW’s “Business Content”. The result can be seen in the recent decline of demand for ABAP programmers and the rise in demand for BW developers.
However, these SAP-delivered “Business Content” BW objects have to be installed and customized by BW developers working side by side with business analysts or end users. SAP allows customization through “customer exits” ( these are custom ABAP codes called by SAP during run time) for different BW objects, especially BEX queries and data sources..
During the earlier years of BW, when BW developers were less experienced and BW applications were less sophisticated, the use of “customer exits” seemed less common. A lot of BW consultants did not have programming background, and were not particularly skillful in ABAP, although many of them managed to get by developing BW applications without much use of ABAP. Besides, a few years ago, BW experts were relatively scarce in a market with high demand; a certified BW developer could still easily get a job without sufficient ABAP skills.
Time has changed. Most BW managers are more knowledgeable and aware of the importance of ABAP (and, better still, business functional skills such as FI or S/D). BW managers now realize that developing BW applications without adequate ABAP skill is like “driving a truck with only one hand”.
Most IT managers nowadays prefer to hire a certified BW developer with adequate ABAP skills (while not insisting on an ABAP certification) to perform the required customization on BW.
SAP does not offer any course on ABAP for BW, and there is no available book on this topic. NECC is offering this special 30-hour hands-on workshop to improve your chance of getting hired by a BW shop, if you’re looking for a BW job. And if you’re already working as a BW developer, this course will give a big boost to you career as a BW consultant.
This workshop will cover the following:
- Understanding the concept and use of all basic R/3 transactions important to BW deveopment
- Understanding the ABAP data dictionary especially tables and fields
- Techniques to trace and debug ABAP programs and functions
- Writing simple stand-alone ABAP program for data extraction and validation
- Debugging ABAP codes in update routines and transfer routines
- Writing custom exits for infopackages, BEX queries, and datasources
- 4 take-home assignments requiring use of ABAP
At the end of this course, you should be able to write ABAP programs and custom exits typically required by any BW shop, and you should be able to handle most ABAP-related questions in a job interview.
