歌词来源于爱尔兰诗人Thomas More，是为纪念独立运动中牺牲的独立志士而作。

电影blackhawk down将该曲重新演绎，作为片尾曲。前面一段小军鼓提琴伴奏下的男声低吟，和后面的和声非常精彩，把勇士视死如归的苍凉悲怆展示给听众。

中国古代可以把屡战屡败，说成是屡败屡战，近代许多次溃败也被说成是战略退却。而战争中的死亡也有不同的分级，此所谓敌人腐烂变泥土，勇士辉煌化金星。那么歌颂死亡，确切地说是颂杨勇敢的献身，便是道德赞许的一种事情。而这件事情也和战争一样，不断地被人们重复着。
