The truth is NO. |

The Risks of Safety
I agree with sludgegine.
Best Safety Lies in Fear. (William Shakespeare) Increased feelings of safety push us to take more risks, while feeling less safe makes us more cautious. In traffic, we routinely adjust the risks we’re willing to take as the expected safety benefits grow, and we act more safely as things get more dangerous. For example, during snowstorms, the number of collisions goes up but the number of fatal crashes goes down, because the snow is dangerous enough that it causes more drivers to get into collisions, and dangerous enough to force them to drive at speeds that are less likely to produce a fatal crash. Studies have shown that: 1. Cars equipped with ABS drove faster and closer to other vehicles than those without. They also got into more crashes than cars without ABS. Overall and net effect of ABS on crashes – fatal and otherwise – was close to zero. 2. Drivers with studded winter tires drive faster than those without them. 3. Small car drivers take fewer risks. On the other hand, SUV drivers trade their perceived safety benefits for more aggressive driving behavior. 4. New cars crash most – if you drive a new car, the probability of both damage and injury is higher than if you drive an older car. etc. A cliché joke: The most effective car-safety instrument would be a knife mounted on the steering wheel and aimed at the driver. Cars keep getting objectively safer, but the challenge is to design a car that can overcome the inherent risks of human nature. |
