JOB:
It’s the conductor’s responsibility to make sure the passenger and freight trains run efficiently and on time. The conductor signals the train engineer when it is time to depart. The conductor also receives orders from supervisors and relays them to the rest of the crew. On passenger trains, conductors collect tickets and fares, answer questions, and deal with emergencies. On freight trains, they inspect freight and waybills. Both types of conductors make detailed reports on their trips.

Work Condition:
A conductor’s job can be particularly stressful. During a breakdown, it is his or her responsibility to get the train moving as quickly as possible.

Conductors and brakepersons must be physically fit and well coordinated. Often, they have to walk the length of a train several times, while it is moving. Brakepersons also work outside in all weather conditions and are often required to do heavy lifting.

Hours for train operators are often irregular. They are usually on call, which means they must be prepared to come into work on short notice. Evening, weekend, and holiday work is common. Junior operators (such as brakepersons) often have the most irregular schedules.

Paid:
Conductors are also paid on the basis of miles travelled. For example, they may start at around $105 per 100 miles travelled, and earn more than $120 per 100 miles after 2 years. Their annual earnings usually range between $60,000 and $90,000. The highest salaries are earned by engineers, who can make upwards of $90,000 a year.

Applicants need to have good vision and cannot be colour-blind. A well-rounded knowledge of mechanics is useful
