I got my class 1 in 2003 in Calgary. There is a paper test for class 1, the book is free and you can get it from register office. I went to a driving school and took 20 hours ($1200 ) trainning. The air break is free. Then road test, I rented the truck from school ($75) and pay $120 to tester. I failed the first time, but I passed the second time. I spent totally about $1700 for class 1. After that I got my first offer as shunt driver in two weeks. There were 7 different kind of trucks I drove every night, it was fun. I drove every truck and connect to different trailer and back it to loading dock (the small door of warehouse). It took long time for that at beginning, but after 2 days it became easy. The pay were $10.5 per hour to start, after 3 months $12.5, after a year $15.5 and 3 years $17.5 and that is top pay for that. There were lots of overtime, I worked 9 to 11 hours a day. While I worked there I talked to some real drivers. They drove the trailers we loaded from Calgary to Edmonton, they are experienced drivers got paied something between $17 to $20 per hour. By the way, the driving school owner is an engineer from India, the receiptionis is his wife. There is only one class room for air break and a small area for receiption. I tried very hard to find a Chinese instructor, there was none at that time. |
