EUROPEAN EARWIG 是一种common garden pest。 EUROPEAN EARWIG Perce-oreille européen Dermaptera DESCRIPTION and LIFE HISTORY * indicates damaging stage *Adult (1.5 cm): Dark brown, slender, elongate; pair of "pincers" at rear; runs more than flies; curves up abdomen and releases foul odour when disturbed; resembles the beneficial ROVE BEETLE, which has no pincers. Egg: White, approximately 30 laid in underground nest in winter and brooded by female (in south, also laid in summer); hatch in April. *Nymph: Guarded by female when young; develops gradually into adult by July. Generations/Year: 1-2; overwinters as adult or egg. DAMAGE Generally beneficial: eats decaying matter, insect larvae snails. etc. Occasional infestations may attack flowers (DAHLIAS, CARNATIONS, CHRYSANTHEMUMS MARIGOLDS), food plants (LETTUCE, CELERY, POTATO, BEETS, BEANS, STRAWBERRY). Young nymphs eat seedlings & chew holes in leaves of many kinds of vegetables and flowers; adults eat stamens, petal bases of flowers, and ripening fruit of orchard trees. PREVENTIVES MEASURES: * trap using various methods described below; * remove possible hiding places ( where it is dark, moist and cool ) * cultivate the soil early in the spring to bring eggs to the surface so they will be destroyed. * exposing adults to the surface may attract predators ( birds ) * start vegetable garden as soon as possible so tender plants get a head start. EARWIGS CAN ALSO BE BENEFICIAL : * there are fewer apple pests in trees where earwigs are prevalent, as earwigs are carnivorous and prey on smaller insects, slugs, etc. * they help to break down organic matter in compost heaps CONTROL: * diatomaceous earth put in hiding places such as * cracks and crevices ( do not water the ground after application -around and on the woodpile and do not put on a windy day ) * around the foundation and the garage * in tubular legs of lawn furniture * around and in dog house * diluted dish detergent sprayed directly on them, when you see them alone or together. Do not spray on your lawn to get rid of the insects because you will kill all the beneficial insects therefore causing an ecological problem in your lawn. * traps of rolled newspapers, toilet paper carton rolls, bamboo tubes bait with peanut butter, fish oil, corn oil. Every morning, tap them out in soapy water. * shallow cans containing 4 oz. beer (strain insects out and re-use). * traps of corn oil, fish oil with either water or vinegar ( 1/2: 1/2 ) in a small can buried in the soil with a bit of the edge sticking out. * both kinds of traps can be put around the garden where vegetables and flowers are placed. Also, put under trees and shrubs and close to where they hide. * a bucket of soapy water put in the garden where they will climb in and drown. * chicken ( bantam hen ) where zoning laws allow. * 2 grooved boards placed upright, groove to groove. * small flowerpot stuffed with moss, crumpled paper or straw and inverted on stake. * bug juice: Put in a blender earwigs with water and spray the result on other earwigs. THE CONTROLS ARE BEST APPLIED IF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD IS WORKING TOGETHER |
