You probably didn't know about DHCP lease expiration. Usually in the DHCP scope there is a setting to determine how long it should hold the IP for the disconnected device before it is released to the next device requesting for a dynamic IP. To avoid DHCP broadcast storm in a large network scope it is best not to set a dynamic IP to expire daily. Usually it's 8 days. Unless your modem is disconnected for at least 8 days, most probably it would still get back the same IP it was assigned to. But that is not the point.
