故事男主角,黑人,工程师。女主角,中国。 (摘自6月18日的报纸) Court hears tale of frozen embryo, motel mistress and mystery stabbing BRIAN CALDWELL KITCHENER (Jun 18, 2005) A frozen embryo, a pregnant mistress and an international Internet romance are at the centre of a domestic assault trial that began in Kitchener yesterday. The accused is an electronics engineer at Research In Motion in Waterloo, the alleged victim a Filipino woman he wooed online before the stormy relationship deteriorated into nasty text messages and ended with a stabbing. But who did it? That will be up to Justice John Lynch to decide as the strange case unfolds in Ontario Court. Crown attorney Cynthia Jennison alleges Dennis Whittingham, 47, stabbed himself in the shoulder with a kitchen knife, then called 911 to falsely report he had been attacked by his wife, Corazon Whittingham, 42. But in cross-examination, defence lawyer Bruce Ritter suggested that Corazon had stabbed her husband after he threatened to have their frozen embryo destroyed by a clinic in England. "You called him a murderer," said Ritter. "You said that God was going to get him, or words to that effect." "No," replied the petite, well-dressed woman. The trial began as Dennis, a foot taller and almost twice as heavy as his estranged wife, pleaded not guilty to charges of public mischief and assault. The charges are in connection with an incident at the couple's Waterloo apartment in November of last year. Corazon testified she was an accountant in the Philippines in 2000 when she began chatting online with Dennis, who then lived in Calgary. As the long-distance relationship blossomed, court heard, Dennis went to visit her and they eventually married in the Philippines. The couple then moved to England, she testified, because she had relatives there. They stayed for three years until Dennis landed a job at the Waterloo high-tech company. While in England, Corazon testified, they had an embryo frozen and stored at a clinic because they wanted to have a child but didn't feel the time was right. They agreed Corazon would be implanted with the embryo in March of this year. In the meantime, however, Dennis began an affair with a co-worker at Research In Motion, she said, and Corazon discovered it by finding a Guelph motel reservation in her husband's briefcase. "I went to the motel to catch him," she testified. "I wanted to see him for myself." The next month, with the marriage already in trouble, Corazon said she learned her husband's mistress was pregnant. The couple frequently argued and she twice called the police because she was afraid of him, she said, particularly in light of an assault while they lived in England. Dennis repeatedly changed his mind about whether he wanted to try to repair the marriage or stay with the other woman, Corazon testified, and he said he didn't want to go ahead with the embryo implant. "I will be accountable to the Creator if I disregard this embryo,'' said Corazon, explaining she felt responsible for starting a new life and still wanted to be implanted. Eventually, she said, it was agreed they would separate, but the couple then argued over who would take responsibility for their leased apartment. Corazon had found a new place and went to get some of her belongings, she testified, when Dennis blocked her way and pushed her to the ground before she ran out of the apartment. She was at a coffee shop with a friend, talking about what to do, when the police arrived, handcuffed her and placed her under arrest. With a stab wound in the left shoulder, Dennis had called 911 and said his wife lunged at him with a kitchen knife. "I really cried and cried," said Corazon of her arrest. "And of course I prayed because I didn't know what to do." She was released by police and driven to her new apartment after about six hours. Later, Dennis was charged with mischief and assault. Ritter suggested Corazon had grown increasingly "furious" over the affair, the pregnancy and the embryo, finally attacking Dennis with the knife. "He told you he was going to ask them to destroy the embryo," he said. "No," replied Corazon. "He didn't tell me that." The trial is scheduled to resume June 24 with evidence including a recording of the 911 call. bcaldwell@therecord.com |
