Topic #19 - Noise in your house
Sometimes, we hear some noise (particularly during winter months) inside our home & do not know what causes it. This may sounds like water dripping, something drops on the floor, or something snaps etc. Most of the cases, you do not have any problems. Remember your house is built by wood frame construction, the wood members expand & contract all the time. This may sound like something is cracking. And look at the rest of your heating & plumbing systems. The heating ductwork is mostly metal; the metal expands & contracts everytime when the furnace system cycles on/off. If your house is older than 20 years, you may have copper material for all the water supply pipes; and is in the same condition, especially when you turn on the hot water tap. Very often you have 2 options: 1) Buy a window insulator kit at any home building store. They come in different sizes to fit your windows. Basically, it comes with a roll of double-sided tape, and large piece of clear plastic wrap. We tape the plastic at the window and acts as a piece of temporary glass. The non-ventilated air between the actual glass of the window and the plastic we put, is an extra insulator. This will help to prevent condensation during cold winter. Topic #20 - Water shut-off
If you see an exterior water tap on your outside wall, we normally have to keep this "open" during cold winter months; provided there is another shut-off inside your house (see photo attached). This type of shut-off has a little knob at one side, and is usually installed for pipes feeding to the outside. We shut off the water supply to the outside by keeping this "close". Warm air inside the house will not freeze the water. When water freeze and expands, it can escape through the outside tap when you have it at "open" position. Otherwise, you may have a pipe burst. If you are planning a vacation away from home, shut off the main water supply for the whole house. Leave electrical & gas supply on. Your house requires warm air supply even when you are away. Topic #1 - No hot water supply (gas water heater) 话题一、燃气热水器不供应热水 1.Check water shut-off valve(cold water supply to tank)above hot water tank is opened. 1、检查位于热水储存器上方的冷水进水管，确保阀门处于打开状态。 2.Check gas shut-off valve(usually a brass fitting located along the black iron gas pipe)next to hot water tank is opened(the lever direction is parallel to the gas pipe direction means open; and when it is at right angle means shut). 2、检查位于热水储存器旁边的燃气管，确保阀门（通常是位于一条黑色铸铁燃气管上的一套黄铜铸的装置）处于打开状态（控制杆平行于管子时阀门打开，与管子成直角时阀门关闭）。 3.If you smell gas, turn gas supply off, and call "ATCO GAS" 403-245-7222(english speaking only). If you smell very strong gas, open all your windows before you call. This is a free-of-charge, gas leak detection service offered by your gas company. If yes, keep pressing down the knob for 30 seconds, and release you finger. Replace the 2 metal access panels. Turn the knob to "ON". If it does not stay on after several tries, you need a serviceman(plumber or gas fitter)to do repair. 7、如果指示灯不能保持亮，重复第六步，如果重复几次后还是不能保持亮，你需要叫人（水管工或者燃气管道调试工）来维修了。 8.The above steps are in addition to the lighting instruction sticker; you can find it placed on the body of most hot water tank. 8、以上几步只是燃气热水器简易操作指引的一些补充，你可以在绝大多数的热水储存器的表面找到那些操作指引。

Advise on Home Hunting
If you are hunting around for an old house to buy, try to stay away from flat roofs. The pitch of any sloped roof mainly determines the roof ability to drain rain water & snow away - FAST! The higher pitch the roof is, usually the better. When you go to Banff, you can see the difference. And think about when they build new homes; do they come with flat roofs? Hi, Tom, a couple of simple questions for you. Q1. When should I ask a house inspector to do the inspection during buying a house? A. before conditional offer, to butch seller price down? B. after conditional offer, just to check any fatal danger? If not A, why shouldn't I use inspector's result to cut the price off? Q2. If I do find some problems after buying a house, and those problems may be the major and fatal malfunctions in the house never metioned in the inspection certificate, who will response to pay the repare? A. me myself B. some insurance company C. inspector Please let me know why the answer is whatever or is not whatever? I am sorry for the straight, but I do care about these questions before buying a house. Thanks a lot, Tom. |

Going away on Christmas Holidays?
If you are going somewhere else to spend your holidays, please turn the main water valve to "close" position when you leave the house. No matter you are in a new home or old house, there may be unexpected plumbing problems you have to deal with when you come back. DO NOT shut off any other supply like electricity & gas. The furnace is keeping the house warm from cold weather. Keep indoor temperature at about 15C or 60F. Remind your friends if they forget, or don't know. Enjoy your holidays.
