How about Sony DCR-TRV38 Mini DV Camcorder? If you do some research, you may find out that some experts evaluate it as one of the best buys under $1,000.

It would output up to 1152 x 864 pixel. If you prefer a still camera comcorder hybrid, there are some other better choices such as, in Sony Mini DV line, sony dcr-trv70, or Panasonic PV-DV953 (it is said a better one than sony dcr-trv70 in same price level). Like Sony DCR-TRV70 may generate still up to a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixel. However, compared to any 2 Megpixel digital still camera side by side, it seems digital camera will win.
It seems that Sony Mini Dv camcoder line releases new 2004 model like Sony DCR-HC85. It is said 85 will have the same video performance and still performance as 70's, but the price is cut down to $1000.
Due to my budget and the fact I have a favorable digital camera, I chose 38 which I have being enjoyed it very much.
