what i know is in many industries, there is a career path for IT folks. the final position is to be the CIO. many times, CIOs have a coding and a consutling background, as well as strong domain knowledge. i hope this would shed some light to people.

我也正纳闷呢，好象大伙儿都把注意力专注在纯技术上了。管理职固然是发展方向，但金字塔模式毕竟不适合广大群众。而象Project Manager,Consultant等职业到是具有广泛性。

俺在国内外IT干十来年了，主要是编程。一点也没感到力不从心，倒是越干越轻松。我现在供职的公司的同事，年龄都不小了，其中一个在我们公司都16年了，编程水平之高。
也可能是IT变化快，有些人想用一点本事混一辈子，这是比较难
