Schools urge parents to prepare children for cold

Parents are being urged to properly prepare their children as they travel to and from school during this continuing cold snap.

Janet Sutherland with the Calgary Catholic School District tells 660News, many parents don't have the option of driving their children, so it's important to have another plan if the school bus is late.

Buses will run as close to schedule as possible Monday, but some delays can be expected. Parents can get more information about possible waits, by contacting their bus company directly.

Sutherland says it's important that children are dressed appropriately for the weather and they're not left unattended at the bus stop, especially younger ones.

The district says if parents or guardians can't ensure the safety of their child to and from school, the child should be kept at home or other arrangements should be made.

Sutherland adds that when the temperature drops below -18 with the wind chill, students will be kept indoors during lunch and other breaks.
