If the purpose is for your family to pay off mortgage when you die (assuming that your spouse will not have enough income to serve the monthly mortgage payment if your income is gone), then you should buy term. The amount should be your current mortgage balance and the term should be the same as the number of years until your mortgage paid off. If your purpose is to replace your income for your children until they turn 18 or until they graduate from university, then buy term and the term should be the same as the number of years left until your children reach 18 or until they graduate from university. There is a way to calculate the beneift amount. Let's say your current make $5000 a month. If you die, your family need at least $3000 a month to get by. That is $36,000 a year. Suppose your investment can make 8% return annually, then you will need $450,000 coverage to produce $36,000 annual income. The formula to calculate this is "the annual income needed devided by interest rate". In this case, it is $36,000 / 8% = $450,000. Again, if your purpose is for estate planning, to leave a large amount money to your children and grand children and not to pay tax, then you should consider Universal Life or Whole Life. Of course, affordability has to be taken into consideration. For instance, if you can't afford $450,000 but can afford $200,000. Then buy $200,000. It is still better than nothing. If you don't want to spend more than $20 a month, pretty much you will have to settle with term, at least for now. Sherry |
