Nelly Furtado的成名就像是一场美梦：祖籍葡萄牙，1978年12月2日出生并成长于加拿大，父母都来自勤奋的劳工阶级，母亲的工作是女佣。小时候，Nelly曾一连8个暑假到旅馆当女服务员。虽然在学校里她是个不安份的坏女孩，但其展露出的音乐才华的确令人不可小视，吉他、长号以及尤克里里（一种来自葡萄牙的小吉他）样样精通。中学毕业后，Nelly只身到多伦多闯世界，白天在一家警报系统公司工作，晚上则到歌厅去唱歌。凭着对乐符的敏锐性以及一把有特色的好嗓子，获得加拿大当地组合Philosopher Kings组员West和Eaton的赏识，带她走入音乐圈。99年秋天，Nelly与Dreamworks签下一纸合约，推出处女大碟《Whoa Nelly！》，不久后便有机会与Chrissie Hynde、Sarah Mclachlan和Beth Orton等巨星级同台演出。

在加拿大获得空前的成功后，Nelly的音乐脚步很快踏入美国乐界，由于她与众不同的背景以及歌曲品味，很快得到了当地乐迷地认同，专辑长时间停留在Billboard专辑榜前100位。在第44届格莱美上，Nelly再发神威，获得“最佳歌曲(I'm Like a Bird)”、“新进艺人”、“最佳流行女歌手”以及“最佳流行演唱专辑”四项重要奖项提名。并且最终获得“最佳流行女歌手”的大奖。专辑销量在加拿大、新西兰、美国、英国、葡萄牙等国都创下了白金唱片的销售佳绩。2004年欧锦赛在葡萄牙举办，nelly的新歌“forca”也被大赛选为主题曲，激情四溢的旋律带着热烈的拉丁节奏被广大球迷所推崇，在如火如荼的葡萄牙之夏广为流行.

2006年6月20日， Nelly Furtado发行了她的第三张个人专辑《Loose》。本周的美国唱片市场相当萧条，只有一张专辑在这周内的销量超过了10万张，而这张专辑就是Nelly Furtado的《Loose》, 较之Nelly Furtado以前的专辑，这张专辑中融合了更多Hip-Hop，R&B和舞曲等音乐元素. 在《Loose》正式发行之前，Nelly与说唱歌手Timbaland合唱的《Promiscuous》以及另一支单曲《Maneater》就已经分别在Billboard Hot 100单曲榜和英国单曲榜中名列前茅。Nelly Furtado与拉丁情歌王子Juanes合唱的《Te Busque》及本张专辑中不太多见的抒情佳作《In God's Hands》以及民族风味十足的《Wait For You》都是旋律不错的歌曲。
