Calgary's public school board plans to cut another 324 full-time jobs by the fall in order to balance its budget. The cuts – meant to help cover a $61.7 million budget shortfall for the 2011-2012 year – are on top of the 172 support staff position cuts announced last month. **************************************** This is typical of what we see happening in our Province - Cut essential people programs and services because of deficits and debts created by a Conservative Government that sells our bitumen for 4% of it selling price ($4.40 for a barrel that sells for $110) and gives billion dollar incentives to gas drilling companies when we have a glut of natural gas and multi billions in infrastructure subsidies to foreign oil companies to build pipelines to American refineries that take jobs and taxes and the petro chemical industry out of our Province. It makes sense only to our Provincial Tories and we hear the Wildrose Alliance. They simply have no vision for the future of our Province.. Harper-nomics at work destroying our future. Then again we won't need many educated people for the McJobs that are currently being created. Canada in a few years will consist of an elite rich ruling class, and a huge poor class of under-educated workers that are virtual slaves to the service industry jobs that they subsist by. Has conservatism belittled itself to a level of balancing the books at the expense of those who elected them? The PC party should rename itself the Unemployment Party.. Sorry Teachers, its more important we have money to send troops to Afghanistan & all those other holes. Wake up people. Soon the only educated people will be in places like Africa & Afghanistan. And we'll have paid for it.. Yup, cut admin to the bone. Lots of Canadian institutions have become far too top heavy, and no one seems to challenge this. What's the point of having service management if you have no service to offer?. This is so infuriating... Other than writing letters to your MP and school trustee (which I have done and all it got me was membership to some stupid mailing list of 'concerned citizens'); what else can you do? Voting against the conservatives is futile in Alberta... there are already 30 kids in my sons classroom. How many will he have next year? A very sad state of affairs when one of the "have" provinces cannot afford to properly educate our children. guess their bellies will be full (with food provided by their parents high paying jobs) while their minds will not be... what will happen next generation?. My ... isn't THIS the proof of the value of Conservatism ... play cheap for years and years, refuse to tax yourself and, PRESTO! Your future for your children is at risk. Who'd'a thunk it? This is the culmination of thoughtless spending by the Conservative government, inpower for years and bloody years in Alberta. Heaven help us all if the same small mindset, lack of foresight and poverty of caring gets into power in Ottawa with a Harper Conservative majority. This is the same sort of genius that wants power over the whole country. Calgarians, you're just the sad belle-weather system. The damage to come is far, FAR greater. This mess kind of proves the old adage, eh? ... " You get what you pay for". Stelmach, you're a failure.. |

The Herald’s Don Braid also explains that Stelmach’s recent flip-flop on the budget may have been the last straw for the embattled Alberta Progressive Conservative leader. Braid: Stelmach predicts broken promise In a stunning feat of anti-politics, Premier Ed Stelmach has exacerbated a sharp divide in his own government over a budget than won't even be released until 2012. The strange result is that nobody's talking much about this year's budget, even though it's sure to come with a deficit much higher than the projected $1.1 billion. No, the flashpoint is the unwritten budget for 2012-13, which Stelmach has long promised would be balanced. And then, just before Christmas, he said it might not. Revenues aren't recovering well. There could still be a deficit stretching out into 2013. Politically, Stelmach did something almost unprecedented -- he forecast a broken promise more than a year before it would happen. Many MLAs in his caucus were startled, puzzled and worried. Why do that, when there's any hope the economy might rescue the government? So far, few have spoken out in the premier's defence. Then Treasury Board president Lloyd Snelgrove started talking Friday. He insists Stelmach showed courage and honesty by giving Albertans the facts. "No, I wasn't aware the premier was going to say that," Snelgrove said in an interview. "But it's a very difficult position for the premier to be in, to have to suggest that we may not get there, that we may not balance the budget until later," he said. "But I don't believe there's any point in giving people false hope. I think the premier did the right thing by saying we're on the right track but you have to be patient. "It's reasonable to share with people that we're faced with some real challenges. They need to know because it's their money." A large part of Snelgrove's Treasury Board job is matching spending to revenues. And he doesn't see an appealing picture. "I would have to say that as we go further along, looking at our projected revenues, that something's gotta give." "It's our job to lay out for the premier and cabinet what changes would have to be made to get back in the black by 2012 if that's the promise written in stone. There would have to be significant changes to the way we go forward." But even without many changes, he doesn't foresee a 2012-13 deficit higher than $500 million. "In an overall budget of $38 billion, that's not so bad. And we could be just one forest fire away from getting balanced." (Disaster expenses are always an unpredictable wild card in budget forecasting.) Snelgrove's message is identical to Stelmach's: The province will continue to cut less important items, but maintain spending on health and education, and continue to build infrastructure. "I'm still not going to quit trying to get to a balanced position," Snelgrove said. "Everybody wants that. "But if there was a magic bullet, somebody would have shot me already." Despite Snelgrove's spirited defence, Stelmach's admission has caused serious internal problems. Right-side Tory MLAs are outraged because they want more cuts to get out of the red. Progressive Tories are ready to stick with Ed's program, but still deeply uneasy. Both sides agree on one thing: It's dangerous to lead an election campaign with a broken promise. Many months before it really matters, they are a worried bunch.
