Great do it yourself.
It could be long time to explain how EGR works, and new EGR costs not cheap. I assume EGR maybe stuck, move and clean it should be ok. By the way, I only have time on Saturday, let me know if you still not go through it. |

Need vacuum tester to check EGR, or listen by sound.
The EGR system is used to lower NOx (oxides of of nitrogen) emissions levels caused by high combustion temperatures. It does this by decreasing combustion temperature. The main element of the system is an EGR valve operated by vacuum, and mounted on the intake manifold. The EGR valve feeds small amounts of exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber. Sometime just working without enough vacuum, clean it could make it normal. I think if change a new EGR may cost more than $100. |

wow, just kidding me
you know the price? oxygen sensor: parts$65+labour$30 catalystic converter: parts$150+labour$50 i am quite sure if you go some auto shop, they will ask you change this, change that, while you know little about this. Big Money. Still a small problem, according to my experience. |

For me is easy, with lots experience
While you car only fail on NOX(not extremly high), and HC CO reading is low. No need to change O2 and CAT. Basicly there is 2 way to control NOX, one is EGR, ANOTHER is timing adjust. For EGR system, could be no proper amount recirculate exhaust gas return to engine, the reason could be no enough vacumm for EGR or EGR pipe is dirty suck, so the best way to clean it or change a new one. For timing adjustment, for high NOx, is to retard the timing. Find the distributor, loose the nuts, turn the distributor( which way depends on car model, or check the car repair manual, retard timing means could hear the idle RPM a little low, but if retard too much, the engine will lose power. Make mark before you move anything, so when finish you know how to turn it back. DIY when feel comfortable, Good Luck. |
