【讨论】what do you think of Canada's legal system
2 cases, one is the most famous accused serial killer in Canada, Pickton, say if Jurors can't be convinced that Pickton is the killer of each woman(total 6 counts), then they must acquit, that means Pickton will walk away freely. http://www.canada.com/topics/news/st...89b8b3&k=60799 the other is a famer who killed his severely disabled daughter for everybody's sake 14 years ago, who is rejected to be released by parole board because he insists it was the best thing he could do for his daughter. http://www.canada.com/topics/news/na...d5bb63&k=20706 my question - what is JUSTICE? |

Three other cases: Richard Wills’s case. This patently incredible, absolutely clear case dragged on for more than five years before going to trial! And this millionaire ex-cop had signed over all his estate and pension to his ex-wife after his arrest and applied for legal aid. The taxpayers had to pay for his over $1 million lawyer’s bill! Charles Smith’s case. This so-called top pediatric forensic pathologist in the country had erred in 20 cases in which people were wrongly convicted or charged. Many people’s lives had been turned totally upside down by his mistakes! O'Neil Grant’s case. This landed immigrant from Jamaica spent more than 5 years in jail and was found not guilty by a jury later. Then he’s deported to Jamaica for no good reason. He was gunned down in Jamaica 5 years after his deportation. “The whole saga of O'Neil Grant is one of cruelty and unfairness,” said one lawyer. |

i think it makes sense, he's already got life sentense and adding more conviction of murder is not going to put him on death penalty! therefore, the second trial will be just wasting taxpayer's money!!! what kinda of justice those families are looking for? The details of how their beloved got killed? I sometimes just don't understand how those people think. If they do care about their family, why didn't they give more attention to the victims when they were alive(pretty much all victims are prostitues on Hasting)? of course, the most disappointing part of this case is the legal system here. i don't really know what's there for. |

He's already a lifer, the maximum sentence allowed in Canada. Adding more counts of charges makes no difference to him. But to the government, the justice system and all the taxpayers, it makes huge difference. It would be a story about WASTE. BTW, there's no death penalty in Canada. |

yeah i know there is no death penalty in canada, that's why i said so. i remember another news i watched a couple weeks ago, a canadian convicted first degree murder and received death penalty in the US, and conservative government said they would not get him back to Canada, you know what, that convicted killer was complaining about it on TV, saying that he's abandoned by his mother country, what's even more insane is that some NDP idiots were attacking the government not doing anything about it. Give me a break, why would we? |

This had been Canada’s policy on the issue of death penalty for decades, though the conservative government now stops doing so. Canada used to seek clemency, which means commutation, not extradition, for its citizens facing the death penalty abroad. Canada also has the right to decline extradition of foreigh suspects to their countries where they may face the death penalty. You're talking about Ronald Smith’s case, aren’t you? That trash, he killed two young men who offered him a ride as he hitchhiked just because he wanted to know what it would be like to kill someone. What a trash! In this particular case, my heart doesn’t go out to Smith, but to the conservative government. He was sentenced to death 26 years ago in the U.S. when he was 26. Now he’s 50, and is still alive. Thank Canada’s constant lobbying for more than a decade for his life to be spared. He should have been satisfied. However, It’s kind of hypocrisy for Canada to stop seeking clemency for Canadian citizens on death row in other countries while continuingly refuse to extradite foreign criminals to their countries where they may face the same punishment. And what if a Canadian citizen was sentenced to death in China, which is not considered a democratic country? Whould the government intervene? |
