CALARY HERALD: Acts of kindness for quake victims
http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...2-162426f536fb Acts of kindness for quake victims Suzanne Wilton, Calgary herald Published: Tuesday, May 27, 2008 The older, small-statured woman stood on tip toes, struggling to place a candle on the ledge of a stone wall at Olympic Plaza when the stranger approached to help. The pair were from two completely different worlds -- he was there because he's homeless and she was setting up for a candlelight vigil to remember Chinese citizens killed in a massive earthquake. Yet that moment of kindness and compassion was symbolic of how the devastating photos and stories of suffering have reverberated around the world and brought together ordinary Calgarians -- regardless of their ethnicity or socioeconomic situation. Robert Luo, of Calgary's Chinese New Immigrant Society, lays candles in the shape of a heart at a memorial for quake victims Monday at City Hall. Ted Rhodes, Calgary Herald Email to a friend Printer friendly Font:****"What I did was just helping out," said the homeless man, who helped distribute 300 candles encircling the plaza. "That's the way it should be." The memorial service touched much closer to home for several hundred people who gathered across from City Hall on Monday evening. Many who turned out despite the continuous drizzle and cool temperatures have family and friends in China, some living near the epicentre of the May 12 quake. It was China's worst disaster in three decades. The death toll now stands at 65,080 but is certain to rise as searchers account for 23,150 missing. A total of 360,058 people were injured and 4.8 million left homeless. Dorothy Xie, who came to Canada from China seven years ago, along with her friend, Nicole Lin, here for just two years, said they've become overwrought at seeing the pictures of the human tragedy and devastation. "We need to honour those people killed and those suffering," said Lin. Though none of their family members were impacted by the quake, both women said they're deeply saddened for those in their homeland. They're also touched by the concern shown by those in their adopted city. "The whole earth is a village," said Xie, 26. "Even in different countries, we are brothers and sisters." The Calgary Chinese Community Association donated $127,000 to the Red Cross China earthquake relief fund. The money will be used to help those recovering from the devastation caused by the 7.9-magnitude earthquake in Sichuan province, about 1,500 kilometres southwest of Beijing. Nancy Sun said Monday's event was a way to mourn the dead and show support for the survivors. "We are here to feel our grief and show our support to the people suffering," she said. "We are all family, no matter whether we're in Canada or China. No matter where we are, we are Chinese." Sun, a mother of a nine-year-old, said the photos of children has been hard: "I couldn't stop crying." The sentiment was echoed by Xie, who noted entire families were wiped out. "This is something we feel we can do for them," student Elaine Cui, 18, said of the vigil, "not just to mourn for their spirits and lost bodies." swilton@theherald.canwest.com |
