"Programmers grow through hands-on research"

Picture this: You're a gamer. Your hand is on a joystick and you're flying a plane (or maybe it's a spaceship) on your computer monitor. The place (or ship) hits turbulence and your joystick begins to shake in your hand. Your grab holdtight and steer out of danger. The joystick stops shaking.

This scenario is played out millions of times a day by computer game enthusiasts throughout the world using force feedback, or haptic, joysticks. The technology behind this joystick that "feels" is actually quite complex and is part of a competitive gaming market that is fighting to create the most realistic gaming experiences possible for consumers. And that's precisely where Seneca gets into the game. The School of Computer Studies is conducting the Haptic Joystick Benchmarking Project, the first research study on the performance of force feedback joysticks.

"Working on this project has been a valuable learning experience," says Radovan Nesic, one of the six students from the School of Computer Studies assigned to the project's research team.

"I've always been interested in how a game actually works under the surface - beyond what's visible on the screen - and contributing to this project has helped answer some of those questions."

The Seneca students are working with Quanser Inc., an Ontario-based company specializing in haptics, to develop a software program that will help determine the standards and effectiveness of this growing technology. Up until now only reviews in gaming magazines and websites have compared the quality of the products being sold. While haptic technology has been around for some time and is used in other applications such as medical, space and flight simulators, there are many flaws with it that still need to be worked out.

"Especially when it comes to the gaming experience," says Professor Evan Weave, Project Supervisor and Chair of Seneca's School of Computer Studies. "The goal of this research is to establish a straighforward protocol to evaluate force feedback joysticks which will allow companies like Quanser Inc. to improve haptic technology."

2009年元旦之前，我去Seneca申请Second Career培训。他们先面谈，复印了我的毕业证、学位证和成绩单的翻译件，然后给我“有条件的”录取信，其条件就是我得通过随后的英文和数学考试（免费）。这是他们给我的模拟题，考试定于1月15日下午。

我印象里，实际考试内容都象最后两道题那样（F、G），给出一篇文章，答几道题。第一篇短文是一个中国学生写的关于中国面条的作文，第二篇短文介绍航天飞机，都很简单，但我花了太多的时间在这两篇短文上，后面几篇文章没来得及细看。

许多人在一起考试。但唯独我考完了之后又被要求写了一篇作文，题目是科技对我们来说是好还是不好。我说：好。

英文考了阅读、语法和essay，没有考词汇。
阅读：1. 中国面条，大意是有时中国食品的意义大于食品的本身。比如生日时吃的长寿面，煮的时候要注意不要断了，因为越长意味着长寿。老寿星寿宴时还会有吃寿饼（上面有莲子）。这个题目对中国学生来说有优势，虽然文章暴长，但这个很能浪费其他国家移民的时间，哈哈。反正这篇就是说食物面条的寓意啦。生词：longevity
2. 航天火箭，主要由3部分组成。lobister，fuel tank booster。题目有问：以下哪个不是火箭的构成部分？哪一部分是发射后停留在空中？之类的。对了，还有问为什么在形容lobsiter和fuel tank booster等附属结构时，用piggyback这个词？
3. 树叶，讲伦敦的Crystal Palace的设计来自于树叶的形状。有些叶子的形状发生了变化，比如看似花，其实是树叶。还有比如有些叶子是长在土底下的，比如onion的。还有叶子会进行频繁的呼吸。
4. 一个女飞行员讲述自己在教练TOM教导下开飞机的经历。
5. right whale的保护：从11世纪以来，人类长期的捕杀导致right whale的数量急剧减少。直到1935年，国际公约开始禁止捕杀该种鲸鱼。文章同时还提供了right whale 的认养及认养表格，会寄给认养人（或者认养人希望赠送给的人）证书、鲸鱼照片还有鲸鱼情况的newsletter。生词主要有：criminal habitat，extinct。

还有一篇，一下子思维堵塞，想不起来了。

咱俩的内容应该是一样的，看来你是英语高手。飞行员那篇文章我看了半天没明白什么意思。

没有没有，是因为“站在你的肩膀上了”。

而且你这么热心，我觉得我们大家也有必要把自己的经验贡献出来，帮助后来者。赤壁里的张飞说了，读好书，就会有饭吃。所以我们中国移民如果都有seneca或什么其他的college读，就一定会有饭吃。
