CALGARY- Calgary’s mayor officially launched the 37-month construction project to complete the West LRT leg, announcing Thursday that the line open for service at 5 a.m. on December 10, 2012. Quebec-based engineering giant SNC Lavalin has been hired to build the stations, tracks and associated facilities. The firm comes with impressive qualifications. It recently completed the Vancouver’s light-rail Canada Line on time and on budget. West LRT isn’t as large as what SNC delivered for Vancouver, but it is Calgary’s biggest single light-rail system expansion since the northeast line in 1985. "This project alone means that over 100,000 Calgarians will have access to LRT service, and we know that many many Calgarians are looking forward to today’s great news," the mayor said at a launch event for media and city administration at a Christian college near the West LRT’s future terminus near Springbank Hill. It’s the latest milestone in a lengthy project, after years of acquiring property, route alignment and 115 consultation meetings with Calgarians. The city’s hasn’t yet released the exact costs for SNC’s design and construction contract, but it has fit under budget comfortably that council was able to insert a $61-million underpass at 45th Street SW. Bronconnier said the total West LRT budget is just over $1 billion, including the costs of land acquisition, an interchange at 17th Avenue SW and Sarcee Trail and a new Ernest Manning high school. Leaving downtown at 11th Street SW, the west leg will stop in Sunalta, along Bow Trail at 26th Street, at Westbrook plaza in the first underground LRT station, then along 17th Avenue at 45th Street, Sirocco Drive and the last stop at 69th Street. |
