I guess you have to define or more specific on what kind of boat you are talking about. I used to race (as a crew member) on several sail boats for 2 seasons on Lake of Ontario and qualified as a skipper who can sail a boat no longer than 18 feet. Never have a chance to play with motor boat except when I was taking the harbor license test(sail boat has motor too so in theory you need a license for that too). It is a very easy test, the tester throw something into the water while you drive the boat and then you need to make a U trun and come back to pick up that item. That's it. Sail boat is a lot more fun than motor boat as far as I know and it didn't cost you a lot to buy one. But cost of ownership may be big. As a good start, in my previous club you can pay several hundred dollars (on top of around 3~400 club member fee)to become a shark club member and then "borrow" the boat out for a 4 hours spin whenever the boats are available. Not too long but if you go with another shark club member, you two will have 8 hours together. You also need to get the beginner skipper license like I do to borrow the boat, the course will cost you around 300 and you also need to get two other licenses, not too expensive though. Like I said, buying a boat is not very expensive, a shark will only cost 6000, and for 70K you can get a pretty good 37 footers. But you need to pay the maintaince, and parking. I my previous club, a dock cost 6000 down (you will get refund after you leave the club)and then you pay monthly based the size of the boat. Of couse, if your boat is small enough and your yard is big enough, you can always toll the boat back and forth. But this is not a good option for sail boat, even it is possible, you only do it twice, at the begining of the winter and at the beginning of the summer, you leave your boat on land or in the water rest of the time. I haven't been on water since I got kids but I will go back when they are old enough to pull the line. Sailing on the water is the best experience you can have, of course, on a winning boat will make it even better. |
